If you want to pay the lowest greens fees, you probably know to avoid weekends and play during the week. But there's a weekday that you also should avoid at many golf courses.
It's fairly common at public-play courses that Fridays are considered part of the weekend, so you'll pay higher weekend rates. Or you might pay an intermediate rate: lower than weekends, but higher than Monday-Thursday.
A course near me that I often play, Indian Peaks in Lafayette, Colorado, is part of a growing trend. Its greens fees are:
Monday-Thursday: $59
Friday: $69
Saturday, Sunday, holiday: $79
While this mid-rate for Fridays isn't yet the norm, it appears to be headed that way. I've been working on filling our The Frugal Golfer database of Best Affordable U.S. Golf Courses, and I continually encounter courses that charge intermediate rates for Fridays.
So when you're booking a tee time during the week, make sure you pay close attention to a course's tee-time rates for specific days of the week. Don't assume you'll always get the "weekday" rate.
Fortunately, there are plenty of golf courses that consider Friday to be a "weekday," as my database research indicates. That's still the norm.
My home course, Coal Creek Golf Course in Louisville, Colorado, is an example. Monday-Friday normal rate is $53; Saturday/Sunday/holiday rate is $64. (As is normal at many courses, Coal Creek charges a few buck less for playing after noon.)
