I did something stupid with my golf clubs. Perhaps writing about my embarrassing mistake will save someone else from doing the same.
So, I was at the driving range when the head broke off my pitching wedge and flew about 50 yards. OK, that sucks, but it occasionally happens. Continued my practice. Then the head of my gap wedge broke off! (These are 4-year-old Callaway Marvik irons.) Uh-oh.
With the second detached club head, it dawned on me what was happening. I like to keep my clubs in my car, so if I'm out and about and want to hit a bucket of balls or play a quick 9, I'll be ready to go. But we've been having a string of days in the 90s. That was dumb of me.
The club pro at my home course confirmed my theory: Heat softens the expoxy that holds the head to the shaft, so what happened to me is the common result of not keeping your clubs cool.
I feel especially foolish because I previously wrote an article about taking good care of your clubs to make them last longer. One of the tips: Don't keep your clubs in your car all the time, especially when it's really hot or really cold.
Of course, when I got home from the driving range I brought my clubs into the house. I'm just hoping that next time I play I remember to put my golf bag back in the car!
Has this ever happened to you?
